Introduction

As the closest astronomical body to us, the Moon has a powerful influence on us as spiritual bodies. The Full Moon offers the most profound energies that we can absorb, while the New Moon is the next most powerful energy.
One way to connect to this energy and influence is to use the Moon's energy to help set our intentions and clear negativity.
The Moon's cycle is 29.5 days and it represents a full life-cycle. Each phase of the Moon has a different meaning and rhythm to the body.
Moon phases show us how the Moon affects the ebb and flow of our entire existence. Once we are attuned to the Moon, we can activate her innate powers.

The moon—and other planets—play a role in our lives, whether we notice how their energy affects us or not. Paying attention to the phases of the moon and how they seem to influence you personally is the most powerful way to utilize the vibrational energies of this heavenly body. Your own personality, moon sign by birth, and the phase the moon was in when you were born will all subtly affect how you work with the moon’s phases and energy. The blessings of the moon are available to you at all times, so why not learn to integrate this beautiful energy into your life? As the ruler of emotion, the moon can be a valuable ally in the tricky world of human relations.

Make some observations over this next lunar cycle and see if you notice any patterns and connections between the lunar cycle and your feelings.

Moon cycles and your mood

New Moon

The Moon is positioned between the Earth and Sun so it cannot be seen from Earth. This phase signifies new beginnings.
The first phase of the moon’s cycle is the new phase.
No light is visible at all, so the moon appears to be absent from the sky.
This is a great time to plant the seeds of a new relationship, set intentions for attracting love, or move a relationship into a new phase—for example, moving from dating to “going steady.”
The new moon is the beginning phase of the lunar cycle, when seeds are planted and intentions set.
The new moon carries a fresh energy and potency, one that may spark a clarity of purpose and being within us. This sky is darker at this time, turning us inward to our own creative light.
Darkness is associated with the divine feminine, with seeing the unseen, and heightened psychic ability. The new moon is a time to tune into your inner messages and the frequencies that want to connect with you. To cultivate these manifestations, set aside time for an intention-setting and a new moon ritual to honor your intentions for this new lunar cycle.

Waxing Crescent Moon (CURRENT)

'Waxing' means the Moon's illumination is growing and 'Crescent' means less than half of the Moon is illuminated. This phase signifies intention..
The second phase is the waxing crescent.
A relationship started in this phase may struggle to survive.
The moon is just emerging, so the energy is like that of a seed that has germinated and is now pushing up through the ground.
There is hard work; energy must be expended.
If you need to focus effort in an area of the relationship, this may be a good time—provided all parties are willing to participate.

First Quarter Moon

Exactly half of the Moon is illuminated and the other half is shadowed. This phase signifies decision making..
The third moon phase is the first quarter.
This energy, to continue the plant analogy, is when the seedling sends down roots and begins to create tiny leaves.
It’s a growing stage, an active stage.
This is a good time to play together, push boundaries a little, and enjoy some excitement.
Make sure everyone stays within their comfort zone, though, as too much chaos won’t be fruitful.
By now, the visible portion of the moon has grown greatly. She is what is referred to as “waxing”. Her light has increased and she is well on her way through her cycle. The first quarter moon is a time when we are likely to want to take action since there is a high energy level in the air.
This a great time to tap into the momentum and accomplish things. Remember that while the moon is growing, so is anything we are putting out into the world.
This means it’s an especially good time to keep a focus on what is working well for us, that for which we have gratitude, and what we wish to manifest. It also means it’s not a great time for an argument or for being in a heated situation. Keep it peaceful, focused, and productive to get the most out of this time.

Waxing Gibbous Moon

'Waxing' means the Moon's illumination is growing and 'Gibbous' means more than half of the Moon is illuminated. This phase signifies refinement..
The Gibbous stage—when the moon is still waxing but appears close to full— is next.
An interesting stage, it brings a sense of anticipation and carries the energy of self-analysis and introspection.
This can create great energy for a calm heart-to-heart with an established love.
However, it’s not the best for a first date as you may get bogged down in feeling like you have to be perfect or over-analyze everything your new date says and does.

Full Moon

The Sun illuminates the entire moon. This phase signifies release and sealing of intention..
When the moon reaches its full stage, it presents the compelling glow we see every month.
This is the stage of manifestation when the guy you’ve been flirting with may finally ask you out or when you reap the reward of some hard emotional work.
If you’ve been waiting to consummate an affair or even to get pregnant, the full moon can be a powerful time to do so.
The full moon can make it harder to sleep, so the nights of and around the full moon are more likely to being insomnia (one sleep study showed that melatonin levels were lower at the full moon and people woke up feeling less refreshed).
Many people comment that they are more accident prone, emotional, or erratic at this time.
It’s a wonderful time for moon gazing, a simple practice of gazing at the full moon for a minimum of seven minutes.
Many insights can come at this time! If you can’t sleep, use the time to dance, journal, or do something creative. Creative energies are heightened at the full moon.
The full moon is a good time to use grounding practices to feel centered and avoid places where people are intoxicated or overly stimulated.

Waning Gibbous

'Waning' refers to the decreasing of the Moon's illumination and 'Gibbous' means more than half of Moon illuminated. This phase signifies gratitude..
The sixth stage is the disseminating phase.
Because this moon’s energy focuses on giving back and integrating within society, it’s a great time to introduce your new love to friends and family or to otherwise make your community the focus of your romantic endeavors.
Group activity is also favored.

Third Quarter

Exactly half of the Moon is illuminated and the other half is shadowed. We will see the opposite side than the First Quarter Moon. This phase signifies forgiveness.
If there is any doubt about a relationship, the third (or last) quarter is the time to address it.
You may find that breaking up is easier at this moon phase or that the hard conversations are less emotionally strenuous at this time.
In pagan traditions, the waning moon is a time to dispel or relinquish behaviors, beliefs, and patterns which no longer serve you or the relationship.
It’s not the best time for a first date, though.
The moon is now waning. Her light reached its peak and is dimming. The waning moon is a time of release. We are more sensitive and aware of endings. Our energy is moving inward again, moving toward the more yin and feminine time of the dark moon.
The third quarter moon can be a time when we find ourselves feeling upside down, or maybe just a sense of being neither here nor there. We aren’t in the potency of a full moon or the fresh start of a new moon.
There is a feeling of transition and perhaps fading. Remember that all parts of the cycle are essential and natural parts of the whole.
There is a time for beginnings, a time for release, and a time for reflection. The third quarter moon is more reflecting and releasing in nature, so honor the natural rhythms and go with the flow.

Waning Crescent

'Waning' refers to the shrinking of the Moon's illumination and 'Crescent' means less than half of the Moon is illuminated. This phase signifies surrender.
The final moon phase is the balsamic stage when the moon is a mere sliver in the sky.
This is a time of transition.
If you need to create space in a relationship or take a break from dating, this is a good time to do so.
This moon is a beautiful time to bring closure and endings. If there is something you’d like to release emotionally or physically, these days before the full moon are the time to do it. This can be as simple as decluttering your room, or something more elaborate such as writing down what you would like to release and safely burning it.
During the waning crescent, it is common to feel more tired, have lower energy, and need more rest.
This time is also called the “dark moon” (the period before the new moon) and it is the best time for yin yoga, tea, going to bed early, and just generally being gentle with ourselves.
We may feel more introverted at this time and that it totally ok. The cycle will soon begin again with the new moon! For now, rest and rejuvenate.

The Best Time To...

Go on a date
Between the end of a new moon and the beginning of a waxing moon is a time when there is an abundance of positive energy. This can make people more attractive to others and so is the best possible time to go on a date. It is also the time when people are most receptive to others so your date is likely to be more attentive to you.

Sign a contract
Studies into the effectiveness of moon phases have shown the first three days of the full moon are an ideal time to sign a contract if you wish to ensure fairness and honesty. Whether you are exchanging contracts on a house, applying for a bank loan or signing a contract of employment the power of the full moon will guarantee that the exchange will go through smoothly without any hitches.

Lose weight
The best time to lose weight is during a waning moon. The waning moon is also known as the banishing moon because it can help smooth the way for anyone trying to banish something from their life and that includes getting rid of those few extra pounds.
If you have struggled to lose weight and have found that every diet you’ve been on fails try starting a new diet at the beginning of a waning moon. It really works and you should have no problem shifting the pounds this time.

Quit a bad habit
The waning moon has also been shown to be the best time to quit a bad habit. If you’ve tried to quit smoking or drinking and failed every time try again when the moon is waning. It’s not only our health that can benefit from a banishing moon.
The waning moon can also help you to banish unhealthy relationships or attitudes from your life. If you want something out of your life start by banishing it during a waning moon phase.

Attend an interview
The best time to arrange an interview is during a new moon. The new moon is believed to increase your chances of success if you are applying for a job or promotion. It also encourages new ideas and gives you the confidence to get these ideas across and impress people.

Be a business success
With the economic climate as it is it pays to keep an eye on the moon phases because making new contacts at the wrong time of the month could have disastrous consequences in business. The best time of the month to make positive business contacts, enter into partnerships or make big decisions is during the period of the new moon. It is also an auspicious time to start your own business.

End a relationship
If you want to end a relationship and move on quickly it’s best to wait until a waning moon, which is traditionally associated with banishing things in your life. So if a relationship is petering out end it once and for all during a waning moon. This will ensure that a clean break is made and allow you to move on as the new moon rolls around again.

Get married
Setting up home together or getting married during the period between the waxing moon and the full moon will ensure that the relationship will be a happy and prosperous one.
Try to avoid the full moon because although the run up to the full moon is good for relationships the actual full moon can cause tension or nervousness. Also the waning moon should be avoided if possible because this will only encourage arguments.

Conceive a baby
Creatures of the sea all follow the phases of the moon when they are breeding, ensuring that they mate successfully when the pull of the moon is at its greatest. Studies have found that the best time for a woman to conceive is around the time of a full moon. Also the studies conducted by American doctors in the Sixties found that women who conceived during this time gave birth to their babies on or around the time of a full moon.

Go shopping
Shopping during a new moon can pay dividends as it is a time when you are most likely to pick up an amazing bargain. Try to avoid going shopping during the full moon because it is a time when we are most prone to impulse buying. During the waning moon you will find that shop assistants are not very helpful and shopping in general will be a difficult and less pleasurable experience.

Take a holiday
The moon can have an influence not only on the weather but also on your holiday experience. In June 2007 there were two full moons, known as a blue moon. Studies have shown that when there is a blue moon there is a higher chance of flooding. In June 2007 we had some of the worst floods ever seen in the UK so try to avoid a month when there are two full moons if you are planning a holiday.
The new moon is an ideal time to take a break as you are sure to have a fabulous time, whatever the weather. Try to avoid taking a holiday during a waning moon as it is a time associated with delays and problems when travelling.

Host a party
If you are thinking of hosting a party or a summer barbecue aim for the time around a waxing moon, which encourages people to be relaxed and in good spirits. Avoid holding any get-togethers during the run-up to a full moon because this has been shown to be the time when people are most aggravated and passions can run high.

* You will see a slight drift in the cycle if you compare the results to other phase calculations...
* this is probably because of different degrees of precision among phase periods used, as well as
* float precision from computer to computer. It is more or less accurate and seems to always report the
* correct phase name.
